Report: Red Sox interested in Trevor Plouffe

The Red Sox are interested in free agent third baseman Trevor Plouffe, Evan Drellich reports for the Boston Herald. If the two sides were to reach an agreement, Plouffe would likely be utilized in a utility or platoon role.

Plouffe, 30, was limited to 344 plate appearances this past season due to strained intercostal and oblique muscles. He hit .260/.303/.420 with 12 home runs and 47 RBI. He has twice crossed the 20-homer plateau in his seven-year career. Plouffe also has a career OPS more than 100 points higher against lefties than righties in his career.

The Red Sox seem set on letting Pablo Sandoval prove himself at third base, but Plouffe could make for a fallback option while also providing backup behind Mitch Moreland at first base.
