A day after requesting and receiving his release from the Mariners, former Red Sox reliever Manny Delcarmen signed with the Rangers on Thursday. It’s his fourth organization in the last year.
Delcarmen, who was traded from Boston to Colorado last summer, had a 5.14 ERA and a 23/12 K/BB ratio in 28 innings for Triple-A Tacoma after failing to make the Mariners out of spring training. He’ll join the Rangers’ Triple-A Round Rock affiliate.
It’s been a tough go for Delcarmen, who was once often sought-after in trade talks and looked at as a potential closer. His command was never great, and with his velocity down, he’s no longer able to get ahead of hitters and attempt to put them away with his plus curve. He may well be done at age 29.
