The Cincinnati Reds have signed third baseman Eugenio Suarez to a seven-year contract extension with a club option for an eighth year, reports Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. That covers him through 2024, with 2025 being the option year. The money: $66 million over 7 years with a team option worth $15 million in year eight or, alternatively, a $2 mill buyout.
Suarez, 26, just went through arbitration for the first time. He lost, having filed for a salary of $4.2 million but being awarded the Reds’ counteroffer of $3.75 million. Now they’ll tear that deal up have him under team control for the remaining two years of arbitration and well into what would’ve been his free agent years.
Suarez had a productive 2017 campaign for the Reds, batting .260/.367/.461 with 26 home runs, 82 RBI, and 87 runs scored in 632 plate appearances. He’s obviously a building block for the next good Reds team, and now the Reds have assured themselves of his services for many, many years.
