Red Sox send $72.5 million outfielder Rusney Castillo back to Triple-A

FORT MYERS, FL - FEBRUARY 23: Boston Red Sox center fielder and former Cuban professional baseball outfielder, Rusney Castillo (#38) fields fly balls during today’s informal workout. After not playing Rusney Castillo for a week the Red Sox have decided to demote the 27-year-old rookie outfielder back to Triple-A.

Castillo played regularly upon being called up last month, but he wasn’t very productive and once the Red Sox acquired veteran outfielder Alejandro De Aza his playing time dried up.

Castillo remains a big part of the Red Sox’s long-term plans after signing for $72.5 million after leaving Cuba, but a last-place team choosing to play a mediocre veteran pickup like De Aza over him suggests they think he needs more development time in the minors at the very least.
