Red Sox offered Victor Martinez $36 million for three years or $42 million for four years

Victor Martinez’s four-year, $50 million deal with the Tigers is all but official, and Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox made a pair of offers to Martinez that he turned down.

One was a three-year deal worth $36 million and the other was a four-year deal worth $42 million. In other words, taking the Tigers’ offer was a no-brainer for the 32-year-old catcher.

As compensation for losing Martinez the Red Sox will receive the Tigers’ first-round pick in next year’s draft, which is No. 19 overall, as well as a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds.

As for how the Red Sox will replace Martinez behind the plate next season, Matthew Pouliot has a post breaking down all the possibilities.
