Rays working to re-sign Jose Molina

jose molina getty

Tampa Bay signed Jose Molina in 2012, at age 37, and gave him the most playing time of his career. He didn’t hit much, posting a .616 OPS in two seasons to more or less match his career norms, but the Rays love his defense behind the plate.

And now Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that they’re working to re-sign Molina, likely to a two-year contract. That would cover his age-39 and age-40 seasons, although in Molina’s case it’s not like he’s at any danger of losing speed and athleticism.

As long as he can catch--and most importantly frame the hell out of pitches--he’ll add value.
