Rajai Davis signs with the A’s on a one-year deal

World Series - Chicago Cubs v Cleveland Indians - Game Seven

CLEVELAND, OH - NOVEMBER 02: Rajai Davis #20 of the Cleveland Indians celebrates as he runs the bases after hitting a two-run home run during the eighth inning to tie the game 6-6 against the Chicago Cubs in Game Seven of the 2016 World Series at Progressive Field on November 2, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio. The Oakland A’s announced last night that they have signed Rajai Davis to a one-year, $6 million deal.

Davis, who led the AL in stolen bases last year, his lone year in Cleveland, was previously with the A’s between 2008-10. He’s 36 and, stolen bases and that big homer off of Aroldis Chapman in Game 7 of the World Series notwithstanding, had a poor offensive season. His line was .249/.306/.388, which worked out to an OPS+ of 78.

He’s probably better served in a part time role and given his poor on-base percentage he doesn’t seem like a good leadoff hitter, even with the stolen bases. A strange move for Oakland, really. You have to wonder if they’re hoping he starts quickly and can be flipped for something.
