Phillies to name Matt Klentak as general manager

After it was reported yesterday that the Phillies would make a decision on their new general manager by Monday, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe hears that the team will hire Angels assistant general manager Matt Klentak. FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal confirms the report.

The match makes sense. The 35-year-old Klentak has been with the Angels since November of 2011, but he previously worked with the Orioles from 2008-2011 and served as director of baseball operations under now-Phillies president Andy MacPhail. Their history ultimately gave Klentak the edge over the other candidates.

According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, Athletics assistant general manager Dan Kantrovitz and Rays VP of baseball operations Chaim Bloom were the other finalists for the job.
