Don Orsillo, who was let go by NESN after 15 years as the Red Sox’s television play-by-play announcer, has wasted no time finding a new home in San Diego.
Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that the Padres will announce Wednesday or Thursday that they’re hiring Orsillo, who’s expected to work as both a television and radio announcer in 2016 before taking over as the full-time television voice in 2017 following Dick Enberg’s planned retirement.
It’s an excellent hire by the Padres. Not only were they looking for a long-term replacement for Enberg--who himself is an announcing legend--Orsillo is among the best play-by-play men in baseball and has been for a long time. His departure from Boston has a lot of Red Sox fans confused and upset. His pairing with analyst Mark Grant in San Diego should make Padres fans very happy.
