The Rockies claimed 25-year-old Clayton Mortensen off waivers from the A’s last week and designated right-hander Samuel Deduno for assignment in order to clear a 40-man roster spot. Deduno, though, was teamless for only a short period of time.
According to MLB.com’s transactions page, the Padres claimed the 27-year-old off waivers on Saturday evening.
Deduno finished with a 2.93 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in six starts at the Triple-A level last season, striking out 29 batters in 30.2 innings. He made four relief appearances in the majors as a September call-up.
Control and injury issues have been a problem, but Deduno has posted quality minor league strikeout rates when healthy and should at least develop into a solid long reliever at the big league level. For now, the Padres will probably use him as starting rotation depth.
