Ozzie Guillen hasn’t been around baseball since managing the Marlins to a 69-93 record in 2012, his only season as the club’s skipper. But he says he’s ready to return to baseball and he’s willing to be a coach as Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Guillen says, “I’m not bigger than the game,” referencing that he would be going from manager to coach, a trajectory that doesn’t always sit well with some. Guillen added:

“A lot of people ask me, will you coach again? Yes, I will. No matter for who. I [also] make it clear a lot of times that if I’m going to coach, I prefer to be in Chicago than anywhere else because it’s my hometown.”

As ex-Rays manager Joe Maddon has frequently been linked to the Cubs lately, Guillen said he would love to coach under Maddon if he were to join the Cubs, calling him “a very good baseball man.” The Cubs, unlike many other teams linked to Maddon, have not publicly refuted interest in Maddon. Rick Renteria, in his first season as the Cubs’ manager, led the team to a 73-89 record. He is under contract through the 2016 season.
