MLB Network just announced that it will air a bunch of famous games featuring walkoff hits tomorrow starting at 10AM. The lineup:
- 10:00 a.m. – New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners, 1995 ALDS, Game Five – Edgar Martinez steps to the plate against Jack McDowell;
- 2:30 p.m. – Atlanta Braves at Minnesota Twins, 1991 World Series, Game Seven – John Smoltz duels Jack Morris;
- 6:00 p.m. – Texas Rangers at St. Louis Cardinals, 2011 World Series, Game Six – The David Freese Game;
- 8:00 p.m. – Houston Astros at Chicago White Sox, 2005 World Series, Game Two – Scott Podsednik steps to the plate against Brad Lidge.
I will fully acknowledge that one should never look a gift horse in the mouth -- and I realize those are some of the most notable games of the past 30 years -- but I gotta say, I really wish that MLB Network and other networks that are re-airing old ballgames would change things up a bit. That they would run games for which we do can not so easily recall the outcome. Or, at the very least, that they would play games which are not explicitly identified and promoted by their specific outcome.
I get that these sorts of games are rewatchable for the fans of the winning team, but it sure would be nice to see some random games that would allow us to suspend disbelief and be surprised for a few of hours.
