Johnny Monell, a 28-year-old catcher, tweeted from his personal account Wednesday that he has agreed to a deal with the Mets. It’s a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.
Monell hasn’t appeared in a game at the big league level since 2013, when he tallied one hit and three strikeouts in nine plate appearances with the Giants. He spent the 2014 season batting .238/.301/.364 with 40 strikeouts in 226 plate appearances between the Triple-A affiliates of the Dodgers and the Orioles.
Monell will function as organizational depth for New York.
