Mets shut Bobby Parnell down for a week due to forearm tightness

The Mets will shut down reliever Bobby Parnell for a week after he experienced forearm tightness during his Tommy John rehab stint, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports. Parnell’s velocity has been down and the results haven’t been great, so the right-hander likely wouldn’t have rejoined the Mets anytime soon anyway even if he hadn’t suffered a setback.

Parnell underwent Tommy John surgery in April last season after making just one appearance. In the previous two seasons, he had excelled for the Mets, saving a combined 29 games with a 2.35 ERA and a 105/32 K/BB ratio in 118 2/3 innings.

With how well Jeurys Familia has pitched filling in as the team’s closer -- Jenrry Mejia is currently both injured and suspended -- when Parnell returns, he’ll likely start out setting up for Familia before his return to the closer’s role is considered.
