Meet the Matz! The Mets call up Steven Matz to make his MLB debut

Steven Matz

The Mets have called up lefty Steven Matz from Las Vegas and today he’ll make his major league debut.

Matz is one of the top pitching prospects in the game, with a 2.19 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 94/31 K/BB ratio over 90 1/3 innings at Las Vegas this season. Which is saying something given how much of a hitters’ paradise Las Vegas is in particular and the Pacific Coast League is in general.

Matz was the Mets’ second round draft pick in 2009. He had Tommy John surgery in 2010, however, and due to numerous setbacks, aches and pains took two years to recover. He didn’t debut in the minors until 2012. His breakout season came last year when he in went 10-9 with a 2.25 ERA in 24 starts for High-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton.

The Mets will employ a six-man rotation with Matz in the fold. He faces off against the Reds this afternoon.
