Mark Teixeira homers from both sides of the plate, breaks Nick Swisher’s MLB record

Batting from the right side, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira slugged a grand slam in the second inning against White Sox lefty Carlos Rodon on Friday night, staking the Yankees to a 6-0 lead. He wasn’t done. Batting lefty against reliever Matt Albers in the fourth inning, Teixeira blasted a two-run home run, making it a 9-2 game.

It marks the 14th time in his career Teixeira has homered from both sides of the plate. That’s a new major league record, surpassing Nick Swisher’s 13, as MLB.com’s Scott Merkin points out.

Teixeira, 35, entered play Friday batting a terrific .263/.368/.562 with 26 home runs and 67 RBI. You can tack on two dingers and six rib-eyes to that. He’s well on his way to his first 30-homer (and 100-RBI) season since 2011.
