Outfielder D.J. Peterson, the 12th overall pick in the 2013 draft, was scheduled for jaw surgery Friday after getting hit in the face by a pitch while playing for low Single-A Clinton on Thursday night.
The Mariners said Peterson suffered an open fracture to the left mandible.
Peterson, a product of the University of New Mexico, was hitting .293/.346/.576 with seven homers in 99 at-bats in the Midwest League before getting hurt. He came in at .312/.382/.532 with six homers in 109 at-bats for short-season Everest before his promotion.
Assuming he recovers as planned over the next couple of months, he should be ready to go by the time spring training rolls around. As a first-round pick, he might get an invitation to major league camp, though he’ll probably open the season in high-A ball.
