Major League Baseball just made the announcement on Twitter ...

.@RedSox closer Koji Uehara will replace Masahiro Tanaka on the American League #ASG roster.

— #FinalVote (@MLB) July 9, 2014

Tanaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday evening with right elbow inflammation and is on his way back to New York (from where the Yankees are playing in Cleveland) to undergo an MRI.

This is the first major league All-Star appearance for Uehara, who boasts a 1.30 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, and 52/6 K/BB ratio in 41 2/3 innings this season as the Red Sox closer. The 39-year-old right-hander also has 18 saves in 19 chances. He was an All-Star eight different times in Nippon Professional Baseball.
