This morning at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, Dodger pitcher Kenley Jansen underwent surgery to remove a growth from a bone in his left foot. This was discovered when Kenley reported discomfort while running last week. A subsequent X-Ray, MRI and CT scan showed the problem in the 5th metatarsal of his left foot. The surgery was performed by Drs. Earl Brien and David Thordarson under the direction of Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Jansen will be on crutches for the next 10 days and in a protective walking boot for the next 3-4 weeks. In total, the rehabilitation process is expected to take 8-12 weeks. The hard-throwing closer can probably be ruled out for the entire first month of the 2015 regular season. Yuck.
There are still a couple of relievers on the free agent market with ninth-inning experience -- like Francisco Rodriguez and Rafael Soriano -- so look for the Dodgers to seriously explore those options.
Jansen, 27, posted an outstanding 2.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 101/19 K/BB ratio across 65 1/3 innings last season for Los Angeles while converting 44 saves in 49 opportunities.
