Cardinals center fielder Jon Jay spent a few days in St. Louis this week to have his surgically repaired wrist examined and the green light given to workouts that, he said, will make sure he’s available when spring training starts next month.

Jay needed a scope on his left wrist in October after playing through discomfort for much of the second half. He still managed to bat .303 with a .372 on-base percentage in 468 plate appearances last season, and he then went 14-for-29 (.483) in the playoffs.

“It’s too early to tell when I’ll be 100 percent, but it’s a good thing there are seven weeks until spring,” Jay told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Tuesday afternoon. “That extra 10 days (before spring workouts start this year) is huge. I’ve already been working. I feel good. I have the time I need. I expect to be ready.”

Jay, who turns 30 in March, should serve as the Cardinals’ primary center fielder again in 2015.
