Jake Peavy’s comeback is off to an encouraging start.
He tossed two hitless innings in his spring debut against the Angels earlier today, less than eight months removed from surgery to repair a detached latissimus dorsi muscle in his right posterior shoulder.
Peavy tossed 16 out of his 26 pitches for strikes while striking out two and walking one. According to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, Peavy’s fastball sat around 90-91 mph and topped out at 92 mph.
“When you start going that speed, things can get out of whack a little bit,” Peavy said. “But I think mechanically we were sound, stuff was there, we made some established big-league hitters swing and miss. Just a good starting point.”
It might be a little early to call him a lock for the start of the season, but White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was encouraged enough following the outing to tell Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune that “right now Peavy is our fifth starter.”
