Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez suffered a non-displaced fracture of the radial neck at the right elbow, the club announced on Thursday night. The injury occurred when Martinez collided with the right field wall attempting to catch a fly ball hit by Paulo Orlando leading off the second inning. The Tigers will have Martinez undergo a CT scan on Friday to confirm the results of Thursday’s X-rays.
Martinez went 0-for-1 with a strikeout before exiting the game. He entered Thursday’s action batting .287/.359/.522 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI. The Tigers have many offensive threats, but Martinez is unquestionably a big part of their run-scoring scheme, so losing him for any amount of time will be tough.
