The Tampa Bay Times reports that reliever Grant Balfour is said to be leaning toward retirement.
Balfour opted out of his minor league contract with the Rays on Wednesday after allowing nine hits and four walks in 9 2/3 innings at Triple-A Durham. Balfour is still making $7 million this year, however, thanks to the last deal he signed with the Rays. Balfour pitched well at Triple-A, throwing 9.2 innings with a 2.48 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio, but it is unclear if he was in the Rays’ plans. And, quite frankly, would likely be looking at middle relief and mopup jobs anyplace else he went.
When you have money, a sweet ride and Australia waiting for you, maybe that’s a better option.
