Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that the Giants have placed third baseman Zack Cozart on unconditional release waivers. The club had designated Cozart for assignment on Monday in order to clear a 40-man roster spot for pitcher Jake Jewell.

The Giants acquired Cozart from the Angels last month along with minor league infielder Will Wilson in exchange for a player to be named later and cash.

Cozart, 34, spent the past couple of seasons with the Angels battling injuries. Across 360 plate appearances between both years, he mustered a .557 OPS. Given Cozart’s age, injury history, and declining production, he will likely have to settle for a minor league contract if he wants to continue his playing career.
