Red Sox bullpen coach Gary Tuck retained his job as the lone holdover from Bobby Valentine’s staff, but now the 58-year-old has resigned from the position while citing personal reasons.

Tuck, who also served as catching instructor and has been with the Red Sox since 2006, took a leave of absence from the team last season for undisclosed personal reasons. However, as recently as last week he was working with catcher Ryan Lavarnway in Florida, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

“He felt it was time to retire,” manager John Farrell said. “Talented guy. Will miss him.”

Cafardo speculates that Jason Varitek “could be a candidate” to replace Tuck, although previously Varitek has indicated that he’s not interested in a full-time coaching gig at this point.
