Garry Templeton’s run-ins with Whitey Herzog punched his ticket out of St. Louis -- and Ozzie Smith’s to St. Louis -- back in 1981. Now Templeton is the manager of the Chico Outlaws of the independent Golden League. His first baseman: John Urick. Who’s John Urick? Whitey Herzog’s grandson.
Their story was in the New York Times on Saturday. And it’s an interesting one. But not just because of the coincidences and laughs that usually characterize these kinds of stories. Because, nearly 30 years later, it sounds like Herzog and Templeton still don’t care a lick for each other.
Time doesn’t heal all wounds, I guess. Nor does it heal all flip-the-bird-at-fans-then-get-yanked-off-the-field-by-your-managers.
