Doc Gooden turned 50 yesterday. As Kevin Kernan of the New York Post writes, “The most surprised person of all is Gooden.”
Kernan catches up with the man who, had he not thrown away so much of his health and youth on hard drugs and alcohol, would likely be in the Hall of Fame today. And who personally believes that, if he hadn’t gotten sober three years ago, would be dead right now:“I’ve been to rehabs. I’ve been to counseling. I’ve been to jail. I’ve been in prison,’’ he said. “The only place I haven’t been yet is the cemetery.
“That would be my next stop.’’A good read about a great pitcher who, somehow, survived that which many don’t survive.
