There’s a good chance that David Ortiz has played his final game this season. According to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com, the veteran slugger is out with a left wrist injury that he suffered during an at-bat Tuesday night against the Rays.
Missing the final weekend isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but the Red Sox are being extra cautious because his symptoms are similar to what he experienced before a partial tear of the tendon sheath in his wrist in 2008. He ended up missing about seven weeks with the injury.
Assuming the Red Sox play things safe and rest him, Ortiz will finish the year with a .263/.355/.517 batting line to go along with 35 home runs and 104 RBI over 142 games. He turns 39 in November and will make $15 million next season. The Red Sox hold $10 million club options on him for 2016 and 2017.
