The Royals announced that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has joined the team’s ownership group. The ownership group, led by John Sherman, bought the Royals from David Glass for more than $1 billion in August 2019 with other MLB owners approving the sale in November. The full membership list of the Royals’ ownership group is quite long, with over 20 other individuals and organizations.

In a statement, Sherman said, “We are very proud and excited to have Patrick as our partner in the ownership group of this franchise. Along with the rest of Kansas City, I have watched Patrick compete and become an extraordinary leader, both on and off the football field.”

Mahomes said, “I’m honored to become a part owner of the Kansas City Royals. I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”

Mahomes, 24, led the Chiefs to a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, earning MVP honors. He inked a 10-year, $450 million contract extension with the Chiefs earlier this month.

The Royals, who play the Tigers on Tuesday evening, are 2-2 to open the 2020 regular season. They are in the middle of a rebuilding phase and aren’t expected to be highly competitive this year.
