Carlos Quentin comes out of retirement, signs with the Twins

Carlos Quentin Getty

Carlos Quentin, who announced his retirement in May only to come out of retirement once the season was over, has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Twins.

Quentin was a two-time All-Star slugger who posted an .831 OPS in nine seasons for the Diamondbacks, White Sox, and Padres, but injuries repeatedly derailed his career and convinced him to call it quits at age 32.

He didn’t play in the majors at all last season and was horrible for the Padres in 2014, hitting .177 in 50 games. However, from 2008-2013 he hit .260 with an .860 OPS while averaging 30 homers per 150 games.

If he makes the Twins out of spring training it’ll likely be as a part-time platoon player facing mostly left-handed pitching because Minnesota is pretty well set at first base (Joe Mauer), designated hitter (Byung Ho Park), and the outfield corners (Eddie Rosario, Miguel Sano, Oswaldo Arcia).
