Bobby Parnell shut down for the season with elbow injury

It’s been, like, hours since the latest bit of bad news for the Mets, so Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports that Bobby Parnell has been shut down for the remainder of the season with “inflammation of the plica in his right elbow.” Parnell has been one of the few bright spots on the team this season, posting a 2.83 ERA and 33/8 K/BB ratio in 35 innings after being called up from Triple-A in mid-June. His average fastball velocity of 96.5 miles per hour ranks fifth-highest in all of baseball among pitchers with 30-plus innings and after struggling mightily in attempts to be a starter Parnell has a 3.33 ERA in 92 career innings as a reliever. If healthy he looks like a potential late-inning bullpen option for next season and beyond, but naturally with the Mets he’ll have to come back from an injury first. For now at least the good news is that Rubin reports he won’t need surgery.
