Batten did not receive a claim after being put on waivers to make room for Yu Darvish after Darvish came off the restricted list. The 29-year-old will be depth for San Diego, but will have to be added back to the 40-man roster if the team wants to promote him to the majors.

Batten was optioned to Triple-A earlier this week. Now he’s been booted off the 40-man roster in a move to make room for the reinstatement of Yu Darvish from the restricted list. Batten hit .239 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 59 games for the Padres over the last three years.

The 29-year-old was with the big-league club for just one day this time around and gets sent back out to make room for Mason McCoy on the team’s active roster. He’ll continue to play every day at the Triple-A level until he’s called upon once more.

Batten provides San Diego with some extra infield depth while starting shortstop Ha-Seong Kim is on the injured list with a shoulder ailment. The 29-year-old has appeared in just one game this season for the Padres after getting into 58 contests the previous two years.

With Manny Machado returning from the paternity list on Friday night, someone needed to get the boot from the active roster and it would appear as though Batten drew the short straw this time. The 28-year-old is just 1-for-3 (.333) with a single in his limited time with the Padres this season.

Batten is up while Manny Machado is away from the team on the paternity list. In his limited action with the Padres thus far, Batten has gone 1-for-3.

Batten had been with the Padres for a few days to provide some depth at first base while Jake Cronenworth was sidelined, but he’ll head back to Triple-A on Saturday with Graham Pauley taking his place on the active roster. The 28-year-old went 1-for-3 during his limited action with the big league club.

Batten provides the Padres with some additional infield depth with Jake Cronenworth likely to miss at least a couple games after suffering a calf injury during Monday’s contest against the Brewers.

With Manny Machado likely to start the season as the team’s designated hitter, Batten was in the conversation to play some third base early in the season. That will apparently not be happening. The same goes for prospect Jakob Marsee who was battling with Graham Pauley and Jackson Merrill for an outfield opportunity. Perhaps he’ll get another shot during the season.

Kim has missed four straight games due to abdominal tightness. It’ll be Matthew Batten drawing another start at the keystone in his ongoing absence.
