Wotherspoon

Wotherspoon was released by the Orioles last week after posting a 15.43 ERA in two appearances in the majors and a 5.54 ERA in 33 appearances at the Triple-A level this season. He’s a depth arm for the Tigers.

Wotherspoon cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization.

The move clears a spot for Tuesday’s starter, Asher Wojciechowski, on the active roster. Wotherspoon was recently optioned to Triple-A after giving up five runs in 2 2/3 innings in his lone appearance.

The move creates room on the 25-man roster for John Means, who is expected to come off the injured list on Friday to start against the Indians. He has appeared in just two games, and he has an ugly 15.43 ERA with a 2.57 WHIP over 4 2/3 innings.

It’s the second trip to the big leagues for the 27-year-old right-hander this season who was designated for assignment in early April. He’ll try to add stability to the middle of an Orioles’ bullpen that has been disastrous this season.

Wotherspoon was sent down last week and is now off the 40-man roster. He allowed three runs over two innings in his major league debut earlier this month.

Wotherspoon just had his contract purchased from Norfolk on Wednesday, and he pitched two innings while allowing three runs in the Orioles’ loss to the Blue Jays. He’ll head down to make room on the 25-man roster for Alex Cobb (groin) who is making his season debut on Thursday against the Yankees.

The exact amount of the bonus pool money that has changed hands isn’t yet known. The 25-year-old hurler owns a 1.85 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 45/10 K/BB ratio over 39 innings between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. He’ll add organizational bullpen depth for the O’s.

Wotherspoon will join the Orioles on Wednesday in Toronto and presumably work in long relief. The 27-year-old right-hander has never appeared in a major league game and posted an uninspiring 4.60 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 94 innings last season at the Triple-A level.
