Cubs signed INF Matt Tolbert to a minor league contract.
Tolbert batted just .198/.252/.266 in 226 plate appearances last season with the Twins. The 29-year-old will serve as organizational infield depth for the Cubs.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman
Twins sent INF Matt Tolbert outright to Triple-A Rochester.
Tolbert sported an ugly .198/.252/.266 batting line for the Twins this season. They’ve outrighted him in order to clear some space on the 40-man roster, but he could still remain in the organization as infield depth.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman
Matt Tolbert has elected free agency.
Tolbert was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester last week but refused the assignment and will seek employment elsewhere. The 29-year-old sported just .198/.252/.266 batting line for the Twins this season but should be able to catch on somewhere on a minor league deal and compete for a utility job.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman
Phillies signed INF Matt Tolbert to a minor league contract.
Tolbert, 30, spent the entire 2012 season with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate and batted just .240/.313/.304 with one home run and a .617 OPS in 113 games. He’ll serve as organizational depth with Philadelphia.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman
Twins recalled INF Matt Tolbert from Triple-A Rochester.
Tolbert has posted a lousy .232/.283/.348 batting line this year at the Triple-A level, so he’s not going to take the majors by storm. The Twins lost J.J. Hardy (wrist) to the disabled list in a corresponding move and recalled the 28-year-old Tolbert to provide middle infield depth.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman
Twins optioned INF Matt Tolbert to Triple-A Rochester.
Tolbert was just recalled from the minors last week and was 1-for-3 during his brief time with the club. He’ll return to a .232/.283/.348 batting line at Triple-A.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman
Phillies re-signed INF Matt Tolbert to a minor league contract.
Tolbert, 31, hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2011 and hit .327/.374/.367 in 46 games in the Phillies’ minor league system last year. He’ll continue to serve as organizational depth in 2014.
  • PHI 2nd Baseman
Twins purchased the contracts of INF Matt Tolbert, INF Matt Macri and RHP Bobby Korecky.
Tolbert, 25, hit .293/.353/.427 for Triple-A Rochester last season. He’s the Twins’ third option at second base behind Nick Punto and Alexi Casilla at the moment. Macri is probably next in line there. While his glove doesn’t measure up, the former Rockies prospect has a better bat than Tolbert.

Jason Kubel was a last minute scratch with a swollen knee.
Uh-oh. Kubel missed the entire 2005 season after tearing three ligaments in the same knee. He hurt the knee chasing down a fly ball on Thursday. The swelling is quite prominent and will keep him on the sidelines for a few days at least. Kubel feels it isn’t a serious injury, but the Twins will likely be a little cautious due to that knee’s history. Joe Crede will play as the designated hitter while Brendan Harris will shift over to third with Matt Tolbert playing second.

Matt Tolbert went 3-for-6 and hit his first career homer in the rout of the White Sox on Thursday.
Tolbert’s homer was a three-run shot off lefty specialist Jimmy Gobble. Tolbert, who was a bust as a No. 2 hitter after replacing Alexi Casilla, drove in four runs from the eighth spot in the order today. It’s where he should be hitting when he plays.
