Nationals LHP prospect Matt Cronin struck out four and fired two scoreless innings for High-A Wilmington.
Cronin picked up a save in the contest, and that’s his second of the season for the Blue Rocks. Drafted in the fourth-round out of Arkansas, Cronin has been dominant at the High-A level with 23 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings and a 1.46 ERA. It’s worth pointing out that he’s 23 -- old for the High-A level -- but the stuff here is impressive; a high-spin fastball that gets into the mid-to-high 90s and a curveball that gives hitters on both sides of the plate fits. The command is just so-so and his split-change is a below-average offering, but both don’t have to even reach average for Cronin to be an effective reliever. There’s a very good chance that Cronin is a high-leverage reliever someday, maybe even a closer.
