Twins RHP prospect Matt Canterino has been shut down from throwing due to right shoulder soreness.
Canterino hasn’t pitched in the minors since the 2022 campaign at this point after undergoing Tommy John surgery and a series of shoulder issues. It’s another tough break for the 26-year-old righty who was a second-round pick all the way back in 2019.

The Twins optioned LHP Brent Headrick, RHPs Simeon Woods Richardson and Matt Canterino to Triple-A St. Paul; reassigned RHP David Festa to minor league camp.
This was the second round of cuts made by the Twins. Headrick put together a respectable camp pitching 6 1/3 innings and a 2.84 ERA over three spring games. He had some major league experience last season in the bullpen when appeared in 14 games for Minnesota and posted a 6.31 ERA with a 30/10 K/BB ratio. to He’ll continue to develop in the minors where he had a 5.04 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP across 12 starts with Triple-A St. Paul last season.
  • MIN Third Baseman #64
Twins activated INFs Jose Miranda and Nick Gordon, LHP Jovani Moran and RHP Matt Canterino from the 60-day injured list.
After a breakout rookie season in 2022, Miranda was plagued by injuries and ineffectiveness during a brutal 2023 season. He wound up hitting a mere .211/.263/.303 with only three homers and 13 RBI in 152 plate appearances at the big league level. He underwent shoulder surgery in mid-September but is expected to be ready to roll for the start of spring training.

Twins optioned RHP Matt Canterino to Double-A Wichita.
Canterino is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and will open the regular season in the minors. He was added to the Twins’ 40-man roster last November.

  • MIN Starting Pitcher #83
Twins selected the contract of RHP Matt Canterino from Double-A Wichita.
The 24-year-old right-hander had an unbelievable season at Double-A Wichita in 2022 -- registering a 1.95 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 54/23 K/BB ratio over 37 innings in 13 appearances (12 starts). He has been limited over the past few years due to the pandemic and forearm issues, so his innings will be limited in 2023 -- but that doesn’t mean he can’t make an impact at the big league level.

Twins RHP prospect Matt Canterino struck out six over three-no hit innings for Double-A Wichita.
Canterino, 24, walked two in the outing. It’s a nice bounce back for the right-hander after he went just 1 2/3 innings with four walks in his previous start. In two-plus minor league seasons, Canterino has an impressive career ERA of 1.48, but he’s been limited to just 54 2/3 innings so far because of the pandemic and a forearm strain. When on the bump, the 54th pick of the 2019 draft has three pitches that flash plus in his fastball, slider and curveball with a change that is at least average. His command comes and goes, but he repeats his delivery well, and he should throw enough strikes to start. Canterino could also see his stuff play up in the bullpen, and is an underrated fantasy prospect for deeper dynasty leagues.
