Appearing in a game for the first time since 2019, Matt Allan pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for low-A St. Lucie on Sunday.
Allan struck out five and averaged 95.9 mph with his fastball. Once arguably the Mets’ best pitching prospect, Allan had Tommy John surgery in 2021 and needed a revision two years later. He’s still just 23, so if his arm holds up, he still very much has a chance to turn into a major leaguer.

Matt Allan (elbow) was sitting 94-97 mph in his first bullpen session of the spring.
Allan was once the top pitching prospect in the Mets organization after drafting him in the third round of the 2018 draft and paying him well above slot value to convince him to skip college. Unfortunately, Allan has had two Tommy John surgeries since then, but he is fully healthy for the first time since 2021 and has looked impressive early in Mets camp. At just 23 years old, Allan is still young enough to climb his way to MLB innings, but that seems unlikely to happen this season after so much time off.

Matt Allan (elbow) is expected to open the 2025 season with a minor-league affiliate.
Allan was widely considered one of — if not the — best pitching prospects in the New York system, but he hasn’t been able to pitch since 2019 because of injury issues, including Tommy John surgery. The 23-year-old certainly has upside, and it wouldn’t be crazy — if maybe not probable — if he gave the Mets some innings at some point in 2025. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues can ignore Allan, but he’s a sneaky add for dynasty formats.

Mets RHP prospect Matt Allan underwent right elbow UCL revision surgery last month.
Allan was considered a borderline top-100 prospect entering the 2021 season, but hasn’t pitched since the 2019 campaign due to ongoing elbow issues, including Tommy John surgery. The 21-year-old righty missed all of last season recovering from ulnar transposition surgery to repair a nerve issue. It’s unclear when he’ll be ready to resume pitching in minor league contests this upcoming season following his latest procedure, which is essentially his second-career Tommy John surgery.

Matthew Allan (elbow) underwent ulnar transposition surgery in January to repair a nerve issue and may not pitch this upcoming season.
Allan, who was selected in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft, underwent Tommy John elbow reconstructive surgery last May. The follow-up procedure is not uncommon for a pitcher coming off an elbow operation. He’s expected to resume throwing in March, but there’s a chance that he doesn’t pitch in a game setting this upcoming season. He hasn’t pitched in a professional contest since 2019.

The Mets announced Friday that pitching prospect Matthew Allan will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a partial tear of his UCL.
It’s a tough break for the Mets and for Allan. The 20-year-old right-hander was the team’s third round pick from the 2019 draft. -- and he only fell to the third round due to signability concerns. He’ll miss the entire 2021 season -- and the first few months of the 2022 campaign as well while recovering from the surgery.

Mets signed third-round pick RHP Matthew Allan.
Allan slid to the third round due to signability concerns, but the Mets have managed to buy him out of his commitment to the University of Florida. Jim Callis of MLB.com says Allan will receive a $2.5 million signing bonus, which is the third-largest ever for a third-round pick.
