JJ Wetherholt is at second base and batting fifth in Saturday’s Grapefruit League opener against the Nationals.
Wetherholt has an opportunity to break camp on St. Louis’ season-opening roster with a strong performance in Grapefruit League play and possesses the advanced hit tool and emerging power skillset to be a colossal fantasy difference-maker at a relatively weak second base position group. The 23-year-old top prospect batted .306/.421/.510 with 17 homers and 23 steals in 109 games in the upper minors last season and could split time between third base and the keystone with defensive wizard Masyn Winn occupying shortstop. It feels like only a matter of time before he ascends to the top of manager Oli Marmol’s lineup card as a top-of-the-order spark plug. The other interesting name to watch is power/speed combo threat Joshua Baez, who broke out with a 16-homer, 34-steal campaign at Double-A Springfield last year. Here’s the full lineup: Winn (SS), Alec Burleson (1B), Nolan Gorman (3B), Pedro Páges (C), Wetherholt (2B), José Fermín (LF), Nathan Church (CF), Baez (RF) and Blaze Jordan (DH).

Pete Crow-Armstrong claimed his first Gold Glove in balloting results announced Sunday.
Crow-Armstong (center field), Ian Happ (left field) and Nico Hoerner (second base) made it three Gold Glove winners for the Cubs. Also chosen were Logan Webb (pitcher), Patrick Bailey (catcher), Matt Olson (first base), Ke’Bryan Hayes (third base), Masyn Winn (shortstop), Fernando Tatis Jr. (right field) and Javier Sanoja (utilityman). Those seem like all of the right choices for the most part, though we’re once again seeing there’s just no reason for there to be a utilityman Gold Glove handed out every year.

Masyn Winn (knee) is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on Thursday, according to Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol.
Winn was shut down for the rest of the season back on September 13 with a torn meniscus in his right knee that he played through for the majority of the year. The 23-year-old shortstop wrapped up his second big-league season with a .253/.310/.363 triple-slash line with 72 runs scored, nine home runs, 51 RBI and nine stolen bases in 537 plate appearances over 129 games. He’s expected to be fully recovered in time for spring training.

Cardinals placed SS Masyn Winn on the 10-day injured list with a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Winn has been shut down for the final two weeks of the season and is slated to undergo arthroscopic surgery in near future to repair damage to the meniscus in his right knee. The 23-year-old likely upcoming Gold Glove Award-winning shortstop is expected to be ready for spring training. He finishes his second big-league campaign with an underwhelming .253/.310/.363 triple-slash line with 72 runs scored, nine home runs, 51 RBI and nine stolen bases in 537 plate appearances over 129 games. It’ll be Thomas Saggese and José Fermín taking over at shortstop in his absence to wrap up the season.

Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said Friday that Masyn Winn (knee) will be shut down for the remainder of the season.
Winn had been playing through a meniscus tear in his right knee, but it seemed inevitable that he would ultimately be shut down — especially after he was scratched from Friday’s lineup. The 23-year-old shortstop finishes with an underwhelming .253/.310/.363 slash line with nine homers, 51 RBI and nine stolen bases in 537 plate appearances. He’s expected to have a normal offseason after undergoing surgery and will be ready to go for the start of spring training.

Masyn Winn (knee) was scratched from the Cardinals’ starting lineup on Friday night.
The 23-year-old shortstop had been slated to return to action after missing the last two games due to a meniscus tear in his left knee, but wound up being a late scratch to the lineup after experiencing renewed soreness. If this continues to linger, the Cardinals may be better served just shutting him down for the remainder of the season.

Masyn Winn (knee) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Mariners.
There was optimism Winn would return to St. Louis’ lineup for this contest, but the Cardinals are going to give him some extra time off to rest. The 23-year-old shortstop will play through a small meniscus tear in his right knee for the final two-plus weeks of the season before undergoing surgery.

Masyn Winn (knee) will continue playing through a meniscus tear in his right knee before undergoing offseason surgery.
Winn was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with knee soreness, which has been an ongoing issue throughout the season. The 23-year-old shortstop told reporters there’s no risk for further damage if he continues playing through the small meniscus tear and expects to have a normal offseason following the procedure. It doesn’t sound like there are any plans to shut him down for the rest of the season.

Masyn Winn was a late scratch from the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Mariners with right knee soreness.
It’ll be Thomas Saggese taking over at shortstop. Winn has been battling through a lingering left knee issue this season, which has required the occasional maintenance day. There should be an additional update on his status following the contest.

Masyn Winn is absent from the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Reds.
It’s a rare off day for Winn, who has been playing through a lingering knee issue for the majority of the season. Thomas Saggese is at shortstop on Sunday afternoon in his place. The 23-year-old shortstop has made six straight starts since missing a game last weekend with left knee pain.
