Englert heads back to Triple-A after throwing two scoreless innings Wednesday. He has a 5.40 ERA in 21 2/3 innings for the season.

Englert had only recently returned from a one-month absence due to elbow inflammation. He has a 5.95 ERA in 11 appearances for the Tigers this season.

Englert’s roster spot is being taken by Easton Lucas. The 24-year-old has registered a 5.95 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 19 2/3 innings of work across his 11 appearances thus far.

Montero, 23, is with the Tigers and has a locker, so a roster move is very likely coming. As Stavenhagen notes, Detroit has a “TBD” listed as their current starter for Wednesday’s game, but the right-hander likely will take that spot. He would be a very risky streaming option against Philadelphia, and the reward doesn’t match that risk. Mason Englert is likely the arm that heads down in the corresponding move.

The 24-year-old right-hander was just optioned out on Tuesday, but he’ll head right back to join the Tigers in Texas after Alex Faedo (hip) landed on the injured list on Wednesday. Englert has been solid in four appearances at the big league level this season, registering a 4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 5/1 K/BB ratio across six innings of work.

Englert has been shipped back to the minors ahead of Tuesday’s contest against the Rangers to make room for veteran reliever Shelby Miller to return from the injured list. The 24-year-old righty has made four relief appearances this season for Detroit at the highest level.

Englert will take Alex Lange’s spot in the bullpen. The 24-year-old has been solid in Triple-A with a 2.35 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 23 innings while striking out 34 and walking nine. He has not yet been able to carry that success over to the major-league level but perhaps now is the time.

Leonard was reportedly in the running for a bench spot with Detroit, but the club ultimately will send him down to Triple-A to start the season. The 23-year-old posted a .904 OPS in 40 games with Triple-A Toledo in 2023, so there’s likely a chance he gets an opportunity down the road barring an injury.

The 23-year-old Rule-5 pick has been shelved since mid-July due to tightness in his left hip. On the season, Englert has posted a 5.46 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 41/17 K/BB ratio over 56 innings of work.

Englert will get some time off after being obliterated for nine runs over 2 1/3 innings on Saturday in relief against San Diego. The 23-year-old Rule 5 pick has held his own this season, making 31 relief appearances for Detroit.
