  • CIN Starting Pitcher #93
Reds optioned RHP Connor Phillips and OF Bubba Thompson to Triple-A Louisville; reassigned OF Conner Capel, IF/OF Mark Mathias and INF Erik Gonzalez to minor league camp.
The Reds have cut down their major league camp to 39 players. Phillips will start the 2024 campaign at Triple-A Louisville where he posted a 4.69 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and a 43/30 K/BB ratio across 40 1/3 innings. The 22-year-old was called up to the majors for a brief stint last September where he made five starts, but struggled with a 6.97 ERA and allowed 16 earned runs across 20 2/3 innings.
  • CIN Second Baseman #6
Reds signed INF/OF Mark Mathias to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Mathias lands with the Reds, where he’ll presumably compete next spring for a spot on the club’s season-opening roster, after electing free agency last month following his removal from San Francisco’s 40-man roster. The 29-year-old offers a ton of defensive versatility as extra organizational depth, but he’s posted a pedestrian .708 OPS across 199 plate appearances in 73 games for the Brewers, Rangers, Pirates and Giants at the big league level dating back to 2020.
  • SF Second Baseman #6
Giants sent INF/OF Mark Mathias outright to Triple-A Sacramento.
Mathias will likely wind up electing free agency after going unclaimed on waivers following his removal from San Francisco’s 40-man roster. The 29-year-old offers plenty of defensive versatility, but holds a pedestrian .708 OPS across 199 plate appearances in 73 games for the Brewers, Rangers, Pirates and Giants at the big league level dating back to 2020.

Mathias landed on the injured list last week due to a right shoulder strain and now it appears he’ll be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. He went just 2-for-10 with a one scored and two RBI in his limited action with the Giants this season.
  • SF Second Baseman #6
Giants placed INF/OF Mark Mathias on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 14, with a right shoulder strain.
Mathias was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, but that option was rescinded on Friday and he was placed on the injured list instead. It’s unclear how long the 29-year-old will be sidelined for.

  • SF Second Baseman #6

  • SF Second Baseman #6
Giants acquired INF/OF Mark Mathias and OF AJ Pollock from the Mariners for for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
The 28-year-old utility man has hit just .231/.355/.269 with no homers, four RBI and three stolen bases in 62 plate appearances at the big league level this season. He’ll add organizational depth and flexibility for the Giants.
  • SEA Outfielder #8
Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Giants will acquire AJ Pollock and Mark Mathias from the Mariners.
No word yet on what trader Jerry Dipoto is set to receive in return for the Mariners. Pollock — who is currently stationed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain — as made a career out of mashing left-handed pitching, and given their platoon-heavy approach in San Francisco that’s exactly what they’ll be looking for him to do there as well.
  • SEA Second Baseman #6

Mathias was designated for assignment in late June and will head across to the county to join the Seattle Mariners ballclub. The 28-year-old hit .231/.355/.269 with three stolen bases during his time with Pittsburgh.
