According to Francys Romero, the Blue Jays signed Cuban catcher Luis Gómez to a minor league deal with a $100,000 bonus.
The 29-year-old is a catcher known for his excellent defense. He played nine professional seasons in Cuba, hitting .246/.318/.341 with just 77 strikeouts in 271 games. He is also from Camaguey, which is the same province and team as his Blue Jays teammate Yariel Rodríguez. Given his age, Gómez will likely start out in the high minors, perhaps even as teammates with Rodríguez in Triple-A, if the Blue Jays decide the right-handed pitcher needs more time to be stretched out as a starter.
