Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr. are set to open the season on the injured list, Astros GM Dana Brown said Saturday.
Brown says both are throwing and looking good, for what little that’s worth. Garcia suffered setbacks in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery last season, and McCullers hasn’t pitched in games since 2022 because of his own elbow woes. They’ll apparently be put on pace for April returns.

Astros and RHP Luis Garcia avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.875 million contract.
Garcia missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery and isn’t expected to be ready to return to Houston’s starting rotation mix until some point in the early stages of next year. The 28-year-old righty doesn’t offer massive strikeout upside, but he’s probably going to make an impact for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues as a viable streaming option.

According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “it may be a long shot for either” Lance McCullers or Luis Garcia to be ready for 2025 Opening Day.
Both Garcia and McCullers underwent surgery and missed the entirety of the 2024 season. There has been some thought that Garcia would be on track to start the season in the rotation since he will be almost 21 months removed from surgery on opening day, but this report pours some cold water on that. It’s too early to tell for sure, but it seems like the Astros may be comfortable going into the season with a rotation of Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown, Ronel Blanco, Spencer Arrighetti, and Hayden Wesneski and then bring Garcia and McCullers along in the middle of the season, or if Wesneski can’t stick as a starter.

The Astros hope to have Luis Garcia (elbow) face hitters before the season comes to an end.
Garcia won’t be able to pitch in a game, but the hope is that the 27-year-old can face live hitters before the season closes to build some confidence for him coming into 2025. Assuming there’s no setbacks, Garcia should be able to have a role in the rotation to begin next year.

Luis García has been ruled out for the rest of the season, manager Joe Espada said Monday.
García, a 15-game winner in 2022, is now 15 months removed from Tommy John surgery, but he just hasn’t been able to get over the hump in his rehab. The Astros will have him resume throwing soon, but the focus will shift from trying to have him contribute this year to aiming towards him having him in the rotation next year.

Luis Garcia (elbow) has yet to resume throwing.
Astros manager Joe Espada wouldn’t say that Garcia might not make it back this season, but added that he’s running out of days to get back on track. The 27-year-old righty remains shut down after a recent setback and could wind up being shelved until next spring. He’s going to require several weeks of minor league rehab starts, so late September might be a best-case scenario at this point.

Luis Garcia (elbow) is expected to resume playing catch soon after new imaging on his bothersome elbow came back clean.
The 27-year-old right-hander has suffered several setbacks over the past couple of months as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, but it appears that he’s about to start ramping up again. There’s still no clear timeline for when he may be ready to join the Astros’ rotation, but it would be a major surprise if we see him there before September.

Luis Garcia (elbow) threw 15 pitches in a bullpen session on Saturday without any issues.
The 27-year-old right-hander is building back up after he was shut down following his latest minor league rehab start on July 4. He’ll throw another bullpen session early next week according to manager Joe Espada before the club determines what his next step will be.

Luis Garcia (elbow) will throw a bullpen session on Saturday.
Garcia was pulled off of his minor league rehab assignment in early July as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. Saturday will be the first time that he has thrown off of a mound since July 4. Hopefully, depending on how that session goes, we’ll at least get some sort of timeline on a potential return to the Astros’ rotation.

Luis Garcia (elbow) has been pulled off his recent minor league rehab assignment.
Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters over the weekend that Garcia hasn’t suffered a setback, but there isn’t a timetable for him to make his third minor league rehab start yet. The 27-year-old right-hander, who is working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery, is expected to throw a bullpen session over the All-Star break. At this point, it’s difficult to envision Garcia building up his pitch count and stamina to the point that he makes it back prior to September.
