Gillaspie

Gillaspie was non-tendered last month by the Padres, but winds up returning as extra organizational relief depth. The 27-year-old righty made nine relief appearances last year for San Diego, posting an inflated 7.15 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 7/2 K/BB ratio across 11 1/3 innings.

All of these were easy cuts. Patiño, the former top prospect whom the Padres got back from the White Sox off waivers last winter, underwent Tommy John surgery in May. He’ll almost surely be offered a minor league contract to stick around.

Gillaspie is a frequent flier between El Paso and San Diego, and he’ll make his way east this time. Lake Bachar was recalled to take Gillaspie’s place on the roster.

Gillaspie provides San Diego with some extra bullpen depth heading into Thursday’s series opener against the Mets. The 27-year-old righty has posted a serviceable 3.24 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 5/0 K/BB ratio across 8 1/3 innings (seven appearances) this season for the Padres.

The 27-year-old hurler is being sent out to help make room for the additions of Tanner Scott, Bryan Hoeing and Martin Perez to the active roster on Wednesday. Gillaspie has impressed in his limited action with the Padres this season, posting a 3.24 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and a 5/0 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings. He should get another opportunity with the Padres before the season is through.

The Padres utilized the upcoming All-Star break by optioning Adam Mazur to Triple-A El Paso to get an extra arm in their bullpen for the duration of the first half. The 27-year-old hurler has yet to allow a run while posting a pristine 0.75 WHIP and a 4/0 K/BB ratio over 2 2/3 innings out of the Padres’ bullpen this season. He’ll give manager Mike Shildt another weapon to deploy in the middle innings.

Gillaspie has been shipped out to make room for top pitching prospect Adam Mazur to ascend to the majors on Tuesday night for his big-league debut against the Angels. The 27-year-old righty has made a pair of scoreless relief appearances this season for San Diego.

Gillaspie provides San Diego with some extra bullpen depth with Yu Darvish (groin) and Joe Musgrove (triceps) landing on the shelf ahead of Saturday’s game against the the Royals. The 27-year-old righty has made a pair of scoreless relief appearances this season for the Padres.

This will be the second time that the 27-year-old has served as the 27th man this season. He’s thrown 2/3 scoreless innings with the Padres so far this year, striking out both batters he faced. He’ll be sent back to Triple-A El Paso when the game is over.

The 27-year-old hurler was up for a couple of days as an extra bullpen arm, but he’ll head back to Triple-A with Randy Vasquez coming up to start against the Blue Jays on Saturday. Gillaspie has appeared in just one game for the Padres this season, striking out both of the batters that he faced. It shouldn’t take him long to earn another opportunity.
