Giants reassigned INF’s Donovan Walton, Colton Welker and Brady Whalen, C’s Brett Cumberland and Andy Thomas, LHP’s Darien Núñez, Sean Newcomb and Daniel Tillo, RHP’s Ljay Newsome, Joe Ross and Drew Strotman to minor league camp.
Walton, who is likely to be sidelined until May as he continues his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery, is the most prominent of the Giants’ first round of cuts from spring training. Newcomb and Ross figure to be the most likely to contribute at some point for the Giants.

Giants signed RHP Ljay Newsome to a minor league contract.
The 26-year-old hurler made his way back from Tommy John surgery late in 2022, posting a 4.38 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 12/2 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings across three minor league levels for the Cardinals. He’ll be fully healthy and ready to go when pitchers and catchers report in February and looks like a nice depth signing for the Giants.

Ljay Newsome (elbow) will start a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday with the Cardinals’ rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate.
Newsome, who is recovering from Tommy John elbow reconstructive surgery last year, was claimed off waivers from the Mariners during the offseason and set outright to Triple-A Memphis shortly afterwards. The 25-year-old righty has a shot at working his way into the Cardinals’ pitching mix later this year.

Cardinals outrighted RHP Ljay Newsome to Triple-A Memphis.
Newsome was claimed off waivers on October 22 by the Cardinals from the Mariners, but the 25-year-old is recovering from Tommy John surgery and won’t likely be ready until the middle of 2022. He could elect free agency.

Cardinals claimed RHP Ljay Newsome off waivers from the Mariners.
Newsome is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and likely won’t be ready to pitch until at least midseason next year. When healthy, the 25-year-old’s great control gives him a shot to be a back-end starter.

Mariners transferred RHP Ljay Newsome from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
Newsome has UCL damage and could be headed for Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.

  • FA Starting Pitcher #31
Ljay Newsome could be facing Tommy John surgery.
Mariners manager Scott Servais revealed that possibility on Wednesday evening but added that an official decision has yet to be made. Newsome landed on the injured list this past Sunday with what was originally diagnosed as right elbow inflammation. The issue is obviously a lot more serious than that.

  • FA Starting Pitcher #31
Mariners placed RHP Ljay Newsome on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
Newsome had a difficult outing on May 2, allowing eight earned runs, before exiting his last start on May 8 after just one inning with elbow soreness. The right-hander’s official timetable has not been set by the Mariners and Newsome will be placed on the roster by JT Chargois.

  • FA Starting Pitcher #31
Ljay Newsome left Saturdays’ appearance with right elbow inflammation.
Newsome will assuredly undergo tests, but as a member of a bullpen for a team that isn’t having their starters throw deep, a trip to the injured list seems very likely. He allowed three runs over an inning before leaving.

Ljay Newsome left Saturday’s appearance against the Rangers with an apparent injury.
Newsome was supposed to be the “bulk” hurler on Saturday but only went an innings before leaving with the apparent injury. He allowed three runs in an inning plus before the exit. More information on Newsome’s status should be available shortly.
