The MLB Trade Deadline is here and you can follow along right here until the deadline passes at 6 p.m. ET on Monday for all of the latest wheeling and dealing.
It has already been an active deadline, with big names like Tarik Skubal, Kevin Gausman, Freddy Peralta, and Luis García Jr. on the move. What could the final day have in store?
Hang with us all day as we find out together.
Pencils down, class.
The 6 p.m. ET trade deadline has passed and we have some last-minute deals to report courtesy of Jeff Passan of ESPN.
- The Guardians have landed another bat to go along with Jo Adell, as they have acquired first baseman Nathaniel Lowe from the Reds.
Lowe, 31, has produced a solid .266/.341/.480 batting line with 12 homers over 83 games with the Reds this season.
- The resurgent Marlins have secured some bullpen help by picking up reliever Victor Vodnik from the Marlins. Infielder Connor Norby will head to Colorado along with prospect right-hander Aiden May.
Vodnik put up a 3.02 ERA last season, but he’s struggled to the tune of a 5.25 ERA so far this season. Still, he has a big arm and keeps the ball on the ground, so he’s an interesting pickup for Miami.
- And finally, the Pirates have added even more bullpen help by acquiring Lake Bachar from the Marlins. Bachar has enjoyed some good success out of Miami’s bullpen over the past two seasons, including a 3.84 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings this year.
It’s an interesting choice to part ways with Bachar, but the Marlins essentially replaced him with Victor Vodnik while getting three players (Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports that it’s RHP Brandan Bidois, INF Hyun Seung Lee, and OF Brian Sanchez) from Pittsburgh.
After adding to their rotation with Robbie Ray in a trade with the Giants earlier today, the Padres have reportedly swung a last-minute deal for another impact addition.
Casey Mize to Padres
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) August 3, 2026
Like Tarik Skubal, Mize is due to become a free agent at the end of the season. This made him a logical trade candidate for the Tigers after they fell out of contention.
The 29-year-old Mize has been excellent when healthy this season, posting a 2.70 ERA and 85/19 K/BB ratio in 86 2/3 innings over 16 starts. He’s missed some time with a nagging groin injury and also recently took a comebacker off his left wrist. With these issues in mind, the Tigers scratched him from what would have been his final start with the club on Friday.
The Padres have surged of late despite little in the way of stability in their rotation outside of Michael King. Ray and Mize will be a major upgrade right away. Meanwhile, Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove are reportedly getting closer to returning.
The Angels have been one of the most active teams of the day, so it only makes sense that they slip in one more deal before the wire.
Kirby Yates to Pirates, sources tell me and @WillSammon
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) August 3, 2026
Yates joins Luke Weaver and Camilo Doval as recent bullpen adds for Pittsburgh. The 39-year-old has pitched to a 3.95 ERA and 36/12 K/BB ratio over 27 1/3 innings this season. He missed the first month and a half of the season due to knee inflammation.
We have only a few minutes until the 6 p.m. ET deadline, but expect a few more deals to trickle in.
The latest comes from the Diamondbacks, as Jorge Castillo of ESPN reports that the club has acquired outfielder Lars Nootbaar from the Cardinals.
Nootbaar has appeared in 48 games this season while slashing .234/.333/.354 with three homers over 183 plate appearances. He missed the first two months of the season after undergoing surgery on both of his heels. He’s slowed down after getting off to a hot start, but offers good patience and the ability to play all three outfield positions at a high level.
Nootbaar is under team control for 2027 and should be a useful player on the strong side of a platoon moving forward. In the short-erm, he should cover left field duties while Lourdes Gurriel Jr. recovers from an adductor strain.
As for the Cardinals, it will be interesting to see if this means Joshua Baez’s time is now.
The Twins continue to strengthen their pitching staff.
After pulling off deals for A.J. Minter and Dean Kremer in recent days, Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca are reporting that the Twins have acquired reliever Jeff Hoffman from the Blue Jays.
Hoffman lost his closer job in Toronto earlier this season, but he’s been on an incredible run more recently, posting a 0.87 ERA with 28 strikeouts over his last 20 2/3 innings. He can be a late-inning difference-maker for Minnesota as they try to keep pace in the playoff race.
Hoffman is still owed $11 million next season in the final year of his three-year, $33 million contract.
According to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic, the Blue Jays will receive pitchers Dasan Hill and John Klein, as well as outfielder/infielder Dameury Pena.
After landing a bat in Jo Adell earlier today, the Guardians have also secured an upgrade for their starting rotation.
Breaking: The Nationals are trading All-Star LHP Foster Griffin to the Guardians, per source.
— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) August 3, 2026
Griffin has been a great story for the Nationals this season. After three seasons in Japan, he’s posted a 3.06 ERA across 22 starts while making his first All-Star appearance.
The Nationals have lost five straight, putting them behind a few teams in the Wild Card race. That’s why we saw them part with Luis García Jr. in a trade with the Yankees yesterday. It makes even more sense with Griffin, who only signed a one-year deal with Washington.
Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reports that the Nationals will receive pitchers Will Dion, Josh Hartle, Kendeglys Virguez and outfielder Nick Mitchell.
The Red Sox announced their acquisition of Adley Rutschman a short while ago and they also secured a bullpen upgrade before today’s deadline.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Red Sox are on the verge of acquiring right-handed reliever Erik Miller while sending former top prospect Marcelo Mayer to the Giants.
The 28-year-old Miller holds a 3.05 ERA over 147 major league appearances. He’s been used exclusively in relief over the past two seasons in the majors. His slider has emerged as a true whiff pitch for him this season as he’s posted a 2.76 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings. That has enabled him to be productive even with shaky control.
As for Mayer, he just hasn’t been able to find his footing in the majors. The 23-year-old owns a .625 OPS with seven homers through 364 plate appearances in the majors. A change of scenery could do well for him.
The Brewers picked up Dustin May and JoJo Romero from the Cardinals earlier today, but they aren’t done making moves.
Brewers are acquiring Antonio Senzatela, per source.
— Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) August 3, 2026
No word yet on the return involved.
Senzatela has been one of the most logical relievers to be moved going into the deadline, even though he hasn’t pitched nearly as well recently. After a dominant start to the season out of Colorado’s bullpen, he’s posted a 5.51 ERA over his last 25 appearances dating back to the start of May. Still, the Brewers will try to get him back on track as they look ahead to the postseason.
We noted earlier that the Giants would need to secure a hefty return to consider dealing Ramos. This definitely qualifies.
When trade is finalized, Henry Lalane and Kaeden Kent will be the return. Kent is the son of Jeff Kent, who played with the Giants and just was inducted into the Hall of Fame. https://t.co/Fh99e23hgG
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) August 3, 2026
UPDATE: Jeff Passan of ESPN says the two sides are finalizing the deal while Ramos himself says the deal is done. We’ll pass along the details as they are made available.
One day after swinging a trade for Luis García Jr., the Yankees are still trying to upgrade their offense.
The Yankees are working on a trade for the Giants’ Heliot Ramos, source tells @TheAthletic.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) August 3, 2026
Ramos, 26, is hitting .264/.304/.424 with nine homers and 34 RBI over 74 games with the Giants this season. While he’s not known as a good defender in the outfield, he fits the bill as a righty bat for the Yankees and owns an .847 OPS against left-handed pitching in his career. It goes without saying, but his power should play better in the Bronx than it did in San Francisco.
Ramos is under team control through 2029, so the Yankees would have to part with some intriguing talent for the Giants to bite. We’ll soon see if it comes together.
A few quick-hit trades of note as we wait for 6 p.m. ET to strike...
- The Red Sox have acquired outfielder Eli White from the Braves for Tyler Uberstine, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. White became expendable for Atlanta after the club’s acquisition of Lane Thomas.
- The Rays have picked up reliever Tyler Wells from the Orioles, per Jeff Passan of ESPN. The 31-year-old has been excellent out of Baltimore’s bullpen this season, posting a 2.67 ERA over 43 appearances.
- According to Passan, the White Sox have landed a catcher in the form of Joey Bart from the Braves.
- The Dodgers also acquired a catcher today by reuniting with Ben Rortvedt in a deal with the Mets. He’ll give the club some depth with Will Smith injured and Dalton Rushing banged up.
With a little over an hour before the trade deadline, the Cubs continue to stock up on rotation help.
Source: the Mets are trading Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor to the Cubs for their No. 2 prospect, Jefferson Rojas.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) August 3, 2026
Holmes joins Kevin Gausman and Braxton Garrett as new additions for Chicago’s rotation. Holmes has been out since May 15 due to a fractured fibula, but he’s a couple of starts into a rehab assignment and should be ready to join the Cubs’ rotation soon.
Holmes was off to an excellent start this season prior to the freak injury, posting a 2.39 ERA over his first nine starts. His contract includes a $12 million player option for 2027, but barring a surprise, he will likely decline and hit free agency this winter.
As for Taylor, he’s been on fire since returning from a hip injury, with seven homers and a 1.285 OPS across 22 games. The 32-year-old can play all three outfield spots and should be a valuable depth piece for Chicago.
Rojas, a top-100 prospect, is hitting .270/.339/.461 with 15 homers and 17 steals over 91 games in Double-A this season. He’s the best prospect the Mets have acquired during this sell-off.
It’s no secret that the Astros have had a need for a outfielder. They finally went out and got one today.
The Astros are acquiring Daulton Varsho from the Blue Jays for Spencer Arighetti, sources tell me and @brianmctaggart. The deal is pending medicals. @MitchBannon was on it.
— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) August 3, 2026
Varsho, 30, is batting .243/.307/.375 with seven homers and nine steals over 99 games this season. While he’s cut down significantly on his strikeouts, he’s done significantly less damage with the bat. And while he’s still a good defender, he doesn’t grade out as well as he did a couple of years ago. Still, it’s an upgrade for an Astros team who finds themselves in the thick of it in a mediocre American League.
Arighetti landed on the injured list late last month due to a foot injury. The 26-year-old holds a 4.60 ERA and 87/50 K/BB ratio in 88 innings across 17 starts this year.
The Cubs aren’t done making deals, as Jeff Passan of ESPN reports the club has acquired right-handed reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Angels.
Zeferjahn has emerged as a useful bullpen arm this season, posting a 3.66 ERA across 45 appearances. While he’s walked 32 batters in 51 2/3 innings this season, he’s also struck out 75 batters. He gets an immense amount of whiffs on his sweeper and four-seamer, and has limited opposing batters to a .165 batting average overall.
Zeferjahn helps the Cubs’ bullpen right now, but he also brings multiple years of team control.
As for the Angels, this is the return package...
Angels getting C Moises Ballesteros and RHP Mason McGwire for Zeferjahn, per source.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) August 3, 2026
McGwire recently pitched in the Futures Game and is the son of former MLB slugger Mark McGwire. Ballesteros got off to a hot start this season with the Cubs, but he faded in a big way before being sent down in June. He’s struggled to hit for power since then, but this is an interesting return for a rebuilding team.
Minutes after a false alarm regarding Reid Detmers, the Cubs have indeed acquired a controllable left-handed starter. This one isn’t nearly as exciting, though.
Can confirm LHP Braxton Garrett is being dealt to the Cubs for 1B/OF Jonathon Long (No. 10 prospect) and RHP Jace Beck (No. 28 prospect).
— Christina De Nicola (@CDeNicola13) August 3, 2026
Like with Nick Fortes and Liam Hicks to Tampa Bay in back-to-back years, Miami sends Edwards Cabrera and Garrett to Chicago within a year.
The 28-year-old Garrett was a rotation mainstay for the Marlins a couple of years back, but his career has stalled since Tommy John surgery. He’s spent the bulk of this season in Triple-A where he’s posted a 2.90 ERA over 15 starts and one relief appearance.
The Cubs just acquired Kevin Gausman from the Blue Jays on Sunday, so Garrett gives the club some rotation depth amid multiple injuries. He also has multiple years of team control remaining, so it’s a nice upside play for Chicago.
We’ve been waiting all weekend for the Brewers to strike and they’ve finally made a deal to strengthen their pitching depth with a playoff run in mind.
Brewers acquiring RHP Dustin May and LH reliever Jo Jo Romero from Cardinals, source tells me and @WillSammon
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) August 3, 2026
May holds a 4.38 ERA over 21 starts this season, but he’s been trending up recently with a 2.92 ERA over his last five starts. The 28-year-old is due to become a free agent after the season. He gives Milwaukee some rotation depth amid injuries and youth.
Romero underwent an appendectomy in mid-July and should be ready to return at some point this month. The 29-year-old owns a 3.35 ERA and 43/16 K/BB ratio over 43 innings this season. Like May, he’s due to become a free agent this winter.
Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that the Cardinals are receiving outfield prospects Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale. It sounds like a nice return.
Frias and Ragsdale are two fast-rising prospects who ranked 11th and 13th in MLB Pipeline’s top-ranked Brewers farm system.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) August 3, 2026
The Mets have been one of the most active sellers at this year’s deadline and they aren’t done making deals.
The Pirates are acquiring Luke Weaver from the Mets, a source tells ESPN.
— Jorge Castillo (@jorgecastillo) August 3, 2026
Weaver is a big addition for a Pirates’ bullpen in need of a trusted arm. The 32-year-old holds a dominant 1.84 ERA and 0.82 WHIP across 44 innings this season. An added perk for Pittsburgh is that Weaver is under contract for next season.
Of course, the added team control also impacts the return in the trade. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, prospect shortstop Sammy Stafura will head to New York in the deal.
We covered the chatter earlier in the day and now it’s actually happening.
BREAKING: The Boston Red Sox are acquiring three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, sources tell ESPN.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) August 3, 2026
Stay tuned for the return package, but it’s likely a considerable one given that Rutschman is under team control for 2027.
Rutschman has struggled to stay healthy this season — he’s currently on the IL with left wrist inflammation — so the Red Sox had to check on his medicals before signing off on the deal. If healthy, the 25-year-old is still capable of making a big impact.
This is no doubt a sad day for Orioles fans, who viewed Rutschman as a centerpiece of the franchise’s reemergence. He ended up appearing in just five playoff games, all of them losses.
With Liam Hicks going to the Rays and Rutschman headed to Boston, now all eyes are on what the Yankees and White Sox do behind the plate before 6 p.m. ET.
UPDATE: Here’s the return for the Orioles, with pitching prospect Anthony Eyanson being the big get. It hurts to trade a player like Rutschman in-division, but you can see why the Orioles did it.
C Jake Rogers is also going from Orioles to Red Sox in this trade, according to a source, as @alexspeier reported.
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) August 3, 2026
O's getting: RHP Anthony Eyanson, RHP Kyson Witherspoon, OF Enddy Azocar, C Carlos Narvaez, PTBNL
Sox getting: C Adley Rutschman, C Jake Rogers, cash
When the Blue Jays acquired right-hander José Soriano from the Angels earlier today, most assumed that the deal was aimed at the club stocking up for next year.
Maybe that’s still the plan, but Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that maybe — just maybe — the Blue Jays acquired him with a bigger plan in mind.
Teams were calling the Angels on Jose Soriano and I have heard that has not stopped as now some are calling the Blue Jays. The trade deadline might get weirder.
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) August 3, 2026
It will be fascinating to track this situation with the three hours and change we have left before the 6 p.m. ET deadline.
Not satisfied with getting the top starting pitcher on the market in Tarik Skubal, the Dodgers are adding another left-hander to the fold.
The Dodgers are acquiring Kris Bubic from the Royals for RHP Carlos Duran, per source.
— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) August 3, 2026
Bubic had a massive breakout with the Royals last season, posting a 2.55 ERA over 20 starts while making his first All-Star Game, but he’s been limited to just nine starts this season due to elbow and shoulder injuries.
Bubic originally landed on the IL on May 14 due to elbow soreness and was later moved to the 60-day IL in early July after experiencing shoulder soreness during a minor league rehab assignment.
Bubic is in his final year of team control, so who knows if he’ll even end up pitching for the Dodgers this year. It’s an upside play at the very least.
The Padres stayed within the division to land much-needed rotation help, as Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the club is finalizing a deal to acquire left-hander Robbie Ray from the Giants.
Ray, who will become a free agent this offseason, has compiled a 3.08 ERA over 21 starts and one relief appearances this season. While that’s an impressive ERA on the surface, the 34-year-old is currently sporting the lowest strikeout rate of his career. He’s also had dramatic home/road splits where he’s seen most of his success in San Francisco.
Still, given where the Padres’ rotation is right now, Ray should be a useful addition the rest of the way.
UPDATE: Here’s the expected return for San Francisco as they attempt to replenish their farm system...
The Padres are sending RHP Miguel Mendez (SD No. 4 prospect per @MLBPipeline) and SS Joniel Hernandez (No. 9) to the Giants for Robbie Ray, sources tell @AJCassavell. @JeffPassan and @JonHeyman were on it.
— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) August 3, 2026
The Rays have secured the catching help they’ve been seeking in recent weeks. And they didn’t have to leave the state of Florida in order to get it.
BREAKING: The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring catcher Liam Hicks in a trade with the Miami Marlins, sources tell ESPN.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) August 3, 2026
It’s unclear who the Marlins will receive in return, but Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that Double-A infielder Brayden Taylor is part of the deal.
Hicks, 27, is in the middle of a breakout campaign where he’s slashing .282/.363/.432 with 14 homers and 62 RBI over 101 games. He still has four years of team control remaining, but the Marlins could afford to field offers with top prospect catcher Joe Mack now up in the majors.
UPDATE: According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Marlins will receive INF prospect Brayden Taylor, right-handed pitching prospect Jacob Kisting, and shortstop prospect Adrian Santana. All of them are top-30 prospects for the Rays at MLB Pipeline, but none were in their top-10.
The Rangers are reportedly listening to offers on everyone, but we know that Jacob deGrom will not be dealt by tonight’s 6 p.m ET deadline.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Rangers approached deGrom about the possibility, but the two-time Cy Young Award winner said he wants to remain with the team. And so, we can put that possibility to bed for now.
DeGrom received a full no-trade clause as part of the five-year, $185 million deal he signed with the Rangers in December of 2022.
Nathan Eovaldi has a full no-trade clause while Corey Seager can block a trade to eight teams. While the Rangers are reportedly willing to trade either, it’s unclear if anything has advanced to where they’d be asked to waive their no-trade clauses. Stay tuned.
After we saw the Blue Jays acquire right-hander José Soriano earlier today, here’s another opportunistic buy for Toronto...
Rangers are trading Josh Smith to Toronto. Getting lefty Adam Macko in return.
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) August 3, 2026
Smith has appeared in just 45 games for the Rangers this season while slashing .213/.299/.272 in 154 plate appearances, but he was an above-average hitter from 2024-2025 and can play all over the place. It would be no surprise if he ends up being a useful player for Toronto.
Macko, 25, has posted a 4.91 ERA and 23/10 K/BB ratio over 22 innings as a rookie this season.
UPDATE: Bob Nightengale of USA Today adds that right-hander Josh Stephan will also go to Toronto in the deal.
The run on bats continues, as Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that the White Sox have reportedly acquired outfielder Brenton Doyle from the Rockies.
Doyle just returned from the injured list after missing significant time due to a left oblique contusion and a quad injury. The 28-year-old has seen his offensive production fall since hitting 23 homers and stealing 30 bases in 2024, but he’s regarded as an elite defensive center fielder with two Gold Glove Awards to his credit.
This move isn’t just about this season for Chicago, as Doyle is under team control for three more seasons.
Per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Rockies will receive RHP Mason Adams and SS Carlos Vielma.
Another bat is on the move on this busy deadline day.
BREAKING: The Seattle Mariners are acquiring outfielder Taylor Ward in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, sources tell ESPN.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) August 3, 2026
Ward posted new career-highs with 36 homers and 103 RBI last season, but he’s been a very different hitter this year. While he’s swatted just seven homers in 506 plate appearances, he’s upped his walk rate to a career-high 17.2 percent. His .383 on-base percentage is 10th among qualified MLB hitters.
With a Mariners’ lineup who has struggled this season, Ward should provide a nice boost from the right side of the plate as they attempt to secure the AL West crown.
Ward, 32, is due to become a free agent this offseason.
UPDATE: Here’s the return for Baltimore...
Orioles will receive Alex Hoppe, Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling from the Mariners in exchange for Taylor Ward, per source.
— Matt Weyrich (@ByMattWeyrich) August 3, 2026
We have another trade involving the Angels on this MLB Trade Deadline day.
Jo Adell to Guardians
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) August 3, 2026
No word yet on the return for the Angels, but Adell fills an obvious area of need for Cleveland even if his production has slipped significantly this year.
After putting up 37 homers with a .778 OPS last season, the 27-year-old has regressed with a .682 OPS this season. His strikeout rate is actually down, but he’s walking less often than ever before while seeing major decreases in his quality of contact.
Still, Adell possesses top-of-the-line bat speed, crushes lefties, and comes with another year of team control. He’s a worthy flier for Cleveland.
UPDATE: Per Zack Meisel of The Athletic, the Angels are set to receive catching prospect Jacob Cozart in return.
UPDATE: This one looks closer to getting to the finish line.
The Red Sox and O’s have a deal arranged for Adley Rutschman. Prospects, medicals set. Red Sox just need to say yay or nay.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) August 3, 2026
Well, this is a juicy one...
Keep hearing the Red Sox are working hard on a trade with Orioles for Adley Rutschman. Rutschman currently has a sprained wrist and is on the IL so medical review in any trade would be no sure thing.
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) August 3, 2026
We mentioned Rutschman as a potential trade candidate this morning, but I put him on the “less likely” side since he’s currently on the injured list. Still, there’s been no shortage of teams with a need for a catcher. The Yankees, the Rays, and the White Sox are also reportedly on the lookout. So the Orioles could do quite well if they decide to move him.
Even with Samuel Basallo in the fold, this move would be quite the signal as the Orioles begin to move past the core that they were hoping would bring them to the promised land.
Rutschman, 28, is still under team control for another season.
While we wait for more moves on this MLB Trade Deadline day, let’s take a look at some rumors swirling around the marketplace.
- Per Jon Morosi of MLB.com, Cardinals first baseman/outfielder Alec Burleson is “one of the most popular controllable bats” on the trade market.
Burleson, who boasts an .805 OPS this season, is under team control for two more seasons. He’ll be 28 this November.
- According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Mets right-hander Clay Holmes “is drawing a lot of attention” via trade.
Sherman mentions the Brewers as a team to watch here, which makes sense now that pitchers like Tarik Skubal, Freddy Peralta, Kevin Gausman, and Jose Soriano have already been dealt.
One could argue that Holmes is one of the better starters available, even coming off a fractured fibula. The 33-year-old just made a minor league rehab start on Sunday. His contract includes a $12 million player option for next year, but he’ll almost certainly test the open market this winter. So he’s strictly a rental.
- Giants left-hander Robbie Ray is another starting pitcher who should be moved today. Joel Sherman of the New York Post names the Padres as a potential landing spot while Bob Nightengale of USA Today links him to the Phillies as they attempt to solve their fifth starter woes. Ray, who turns 35 in October, is in the final season of a five-year, $115 million contract.
Another trade for the Angels this morning...
Trade news: The Atlanta Braves are acquiring left-handed reliever Brent Suter from the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr., sources tell ESPN.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) August 3, 2026
Suter, who turns 37 later this month, fits the mold of a reliable veteran arm from the left side. He’s posted a 4.12 ERA with 55 strikeouts and 17 walks in 63 1/3 innings this season. After a rough stretch at the end of June, Suter has put up a 2.51 ERA over his last nine appearances.
Alvarez, 23, is a former top 100 prospect who excels at making contact. He likely fits best in a utility role with his new team.
After the Angels traded Jose Soriano to the Blue Jays today, another AL West team could be willing to part with some controllable pitching ahead of today’s 6 p.m. ET deadline.
Heard today the Rangers are willing to listen on MacKenzie Gore and Jacob Latz.
— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) August 3, 2026
Price is high, because neither is a pending free agent, but the 5-game losing streak has nudged the Rangers into a buy-and-sell posture, as I mentioned earlier on @MLBNetwork
Of course, the Rangers just traded for Gore this past offseason. The 27-year-old remains under team control for another year. Gore has disappointed with a 4.77 ERA over 23 starts this season, but the southpaw misses plenty of bats and the secondary numbers show reason for intrigue.
Latz has enjoyed a breakout season at age-30 this year, posting a 1.80 ERA with 21 saves while making a trip to the All-Star Game. As opposed to Gore, he still has multiple years of team control remaining.
The Rangers have been hovering around the .500 mark all season, but they’ve lost five straight and would have to jump a few teams to secure a playoff spot. They could be a sleeper team to be active today.
The deals just keep on coming...
The Phillies are acquiring 2B Luis Arraez and RHP Caleb Kilian from the Giants for RHP Ramon Marquez (Phillies No. 4 prospect per @MLBPipeline) and RHP Marty Gair, per source. @JeffPassan and @BNightengale were on it.
— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) August 3, 2026
The Philadelphia Phillies also are close to finalizing a deal to acquire Mets LHP Brooks Raley
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 3, 2026
Well, Bryce Harper has to be happy with these developments.
Arráez is an interesting fit for the Phillies, who were seemingly targeting a right-handed bat, most likely in the form of an outfielder. Arráez is neither of these things, but he’s been one of the most sought-after bats on the market.
Arráez, 29, is well on his way to his fourth career batting title. He’s slashing .324/.360/.440 with four homers, 43 RBI, and 10 stolen bases over 105 games this season. He’s also shown some improvements defensively at second base. It’s unclear how the Phillies plan to use him, but the play could include moving Bryson Stott to third base, Alec Bohm to first base, and Bryce Harper back to the outfield. It’s a big gamble defensively.
Ramon Marquez is the centerpiece of the deal for San Francisco as he’s in the midst of a breakout year. The 20-year-old has put up a dominant 1.68 ERA with 93 strikeouts in 59 innings (11 starts, one relief appearance) between Class A Clearwater and High-A Jersey Shore this season.
As for Raley and Kilian, the Phillies hope the veteran relievers will fortify the bullpen for the stretch run. Raley has been lights out this season (1.96 ERA) while Kilian has mostly struggled since a strong start to the year. Advanced metrics suggest that Kilian has deserved better results, so the Phillies are banking on that moving forward.
And we have another big deal to start the day!
BREAKING: The Toronto Blue Jays are acquiring right-hander Jose Soriano in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels, sources tell ESPN.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) August 3, 2026
Passan adds that the Angels will receive shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti and right-hander Angel Rivero.
The Blue Jays, who just traded Kevin Gausman to the Cubs, sit at 52-60 and in last place in the American League East. However, this is a trade designed at competing next year and beyond. Soriano is under team control through the 2028 season.
Soriano, 28, has compiled a quality 3.29 ERA and 127/57 K/BB ratio in 123 innings across 22 starts this season. After starting the season strong, he struggled through May and June, but he turned things around in July. Good timing for the Angels, ultimately.
Nimmala is the big get in the trade for the Angels. A first-round pick in 2023, the 20-year-old is hitting .265/.364/.453 with eight homers and six steals across 62 games in the minors this season. He’s missed some time with a hamstring injury, but has already worked his way up to Double-A. According to MLB Pipeline, Nimmala ranks as the No. 43 prospect in the game.
Neither Micheletti nor Rivero were in Toronto’s top-30 prospects at MLB Pipeline. Micheletti, a left-handed hitting outfielder, has 14 homers and an .800 OPS at Double-A this season. Rivero, 19, has been pitching in rookie ball.
It will be interesting to see if this deal makes the Angels more willing to part with shortstop Zach Neto today. Stay tuned.
