Braves reassigned INFs Leury García, Alejo López and Phillip Evans, and RHPs Grant Holmes and Jake Walsh to minor league camp.
All five were in Braves camp this spring as non-roster invitees with no real shot at making Atlanta’s season-opening roster. García, López and Evans have all spent time in the big leagues, while Holmes and Walsh figure to continue providing extra organizational relief depth back at Triple-A Gwinnett.
  • ATL Center Fielder #28
Braves signed OF Leury García to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
García latches on with the Braves as extra outfield depth heading into spring training after being released last March by the White Sox. The 32-year-old veteran didn’t play anywhere last season, so it’s difficult to forecast his odds of actually making Atlanta’s roster. He’s played in 701 contests in the majors since 2013.
  • FA Second Baseman #24
White Sox released OF Leury García.
The White Sox are eating the $11 million left on the final two years of García’s contract. The 32-year-old struggled at the plate this spring and the club wants to move forward with some of their younger in-house alternatives like Romy Gonzalez.

  • FA Second Baseman #24
Leury Garcia is not expected to make the White Sox’ Opening Day roster.
Despite the fact that Garcia still has two years and $11 million remaining on his contract with the White Sox, it sounds like Garcia will be beaten out by Hanser Alberto for a reserve infielder gig. The 32-year-old struggled in Cactus League play, hitting just .222 (8-for-36) with a homer, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

  • FA Second Baseman #24
Leury García went 1-for-3 with a stolen base on Wednesday in his return to the White Sox’ lineup.
García was held out of spring training action for just over one week due to a relatively minor left hand issue. The 32-year-old veteran is expected to open the regular season in a versatile super-utility role for Chicago.

  • FA Second Baseman #24
Leury García (hand) will return to the White Sox’ lineup on Wednesday.
García has been dealing with a left hand issue, which has kept him out of Cactus League action since last Tuesday, but it doesn’t sound like a serious concern.

  • BOS Second Baseman #23
Romy Gonzalez and Lenyn Sosa will compete in spring training for the White Sox’ starting job at second base.
Barring an unexpected acquisition prior to Opening Day, Gonzalez and Sosa are the most likely internal options to fill the White Sox’ second-base void. Veteran journeymen Hanser Alberto and Erik González are in camp on minor league deals, but don’t exactly profile as viable everyday options. It sounds like Chicago is penciling Leury Garcia into a utility role. There isn’t a ton of fantasy appeal here, but it’s a position battle worth following for managers in AL-only formats.

  • TB Left Fielder #72
Eloy Jiménez (leg) was held out of the White Sox starting lineup for Friday’s contest against the Twins.
Jiménez was pulled from Thursday’s game against the Royals due to soreness in his right leg, and it appears as through it’s still bothering him on Friday. Leury Garcia will start in his place in left field and bat seventh for the White Sox against right-hander Sonny Gray and the Twins on Friday evening in Chicago.

  • FA Second Baseman #24
White Sox activated INF/OF Leury Garcia from the 10-day injured list.
Garcia gets the call back to Chicago following a one-game minor league rehab assignment with third baseman Yoán Moncada (hamstring) landing on the injured list. The 31-year-old veteran infielder will return to a reserve utility role moving forward.

  • FA Second Baseman #24
Leury Garcia (back) went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts on Friday in a minor league rehab contest for Triple-A Charlotte.
Garcia is working his way towards rejoining the White Sox’ bench after landing on the injured list with a lower back strain earlier this month. The veteran utility infielder doesn’t figure to require a lengthy rehab assignment.
