Castillo

Castillo is a former shortstop that’s only been pitching for two years. As you might suspect, he has plenty of arm strength, but his secondary pitches need some work. He spent all of 2011 in High-A, posting a 2.54 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 46/16 K/BB ratio over 46 innings. It might be a stretch to think he’s ready for a major league roster spot, but the Cubs will try to hide him, as he does have upside.

A Rule 5 pick, Castillo has been out since early May with a left groin strain. He held a 7.04 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 7 2/3 innings before the injury.

The Cubs have flown in Scott Maine just in case Castillo’s groin shows no improvement over the next several hours. The Rule 5 Draft pick has posted a rough 7.04 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 7 2/3 innings this season.

The strain is being referred to as “moderate,” so it could be more than a minimum stay on the DL for the Rule 5 pick. Scott Maine takes his spot on the roster.

This is the first update we’ve had on Castillo since he was placed on the disabled list in early May. As a Rule 5 pick, the Cubs will need to decide whether to add him to the active roster or offer him back to the Phillies when he completes his rehab assignment.

Castillo, a Rule 5 pick last December, has been out since early May with a left groin strain. As long as he can hold down a roster spot over the next two weeks, he won’t be offered back to the Phillies.

The Cubs finally made the signing of Carlos Villanueva official on Saturday, and Castillo was the casualty on the 40-man roster. The 23-year-old posted a 7.88 ERA, 2.25 WHIP and 13/12 K/BB ratio over 16 innings with the Cubs in 2012, but has a live arm and shouldn’t have difficulty finding another team willing to give him a chance.

Castillo was designated for assignment by Chicago in late January and made it through waivers unclaimed. The 23-year-old right-hander will serve as organizational relief depth for the Cubs again this season.

Castillo held a 4.73 ERA at the Double-A level in 2015. He hasn’t seen the majors since 2012 and is merely a depth addition.

He was competing with Logan Kensing for the final spot in the bullpen, but the latter won out. Castillo hasn’t seen the majors since 2012.
