Mariners reassigned SS Colt Emerson, OF Lazaro Montes, RHP Casey Lawrence, RHP Sauryn Lao and LHP Austin Kitchen to minor league camp.
The 19-year-old Emerson went 2-for-17 with a homer and a 3/4 K/BB in big-league camp. Seattle’s top prospect, he’ll probably open up this season back at high-A Everett and finish it in Double-A. Kitchen was the one guy here with a slim chance of making the Mariners, but he gave up seven runs in four innings.
  • SEA Right Fielder
Lazaro Montes hit a two-run homer in a loss to the White Sox on Saturday.
Montes, 20, has now homered twice in his limited Cactus League action. The massive left-handed hitter offers huge power potential in his left-handed bat, but it’s not likely we see the outfielder in the majors until 2026 at the earliest. He’s still someone who has to be monitored in every possible keeper league.
  • SEA Right Fielder
Lazaro Montes clobbered a three-run homer on Monday in the Mariners’ 12-8 victory over the Brewers in Cactus League action.
Montes connected for his first round-tripper of the spring, crushing a no-doubter to right-center field in the eighth inning of this one. The 20-year-old phenom checked in at 218 overall in Rotoworld’s latest Top 500 Dynasty Rankings update and boasts significant over-the-fence power upside. The central question moving forward is whether he’ll get to it consistently enough in game action once he reaches the upper minors.
  • SEA Right Fielder
Mariners OF prospect Lazaro Montes went 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBI on Friday for High-A Everett.
Montes got off to a frosty start following a late-June promotion to High-A Everett, but has really turned things around the past few weeks. The 19-year-old prodigy has gone deep seven times since the start of August and has a pair of multi-homer performances in his last three contests. His plate skills are going to have to improve if he’s going to blossom into a four-category fantasy superstar down the road, but there’s plenty to dream on from a raw power standpoint. He could be special, if everything comes together.
  • SEA Right Fielder
Mariners promoted OF prospect Lazaro Montes to High-A Everett.
Montes’ meteoric rise continues as he earns a promotion to High-A after slashing a robust .309/.411/.527 with 13 homers, 72 RBI and one steal in 309 plate appearances over 65 games for Low-A Modesto to open the year. The 19-year-old prodigy could find himself in the upper minors by the end of the 2024 campaign and is rapidly emerging as one of the top dynasty prospects in the fantasy landscape. He projects as an impact four-category fantasy contributor down the road and basically hasn’t stopped hitting for power since making his professional debut back in 2022.
  • SEA Right Fielder
Mariners OF prospect Lazaro Montes went 2-for-4 with three RBI on Friday for Low-A Modesto.
Montes simply hasn’t stopped hitting all season and appears poised for a promotion at this juncture. The 19-year-old top prospect has the look of a true middle-of-the-order masher thanks to his size and strength and boasts a sublime .326/.428/.564 triple-slash line with 13 homers and a minor league-leading 69 RBI through 58 games this season. He’s rapidly evolving into one of the top fantasy prospects in baseball.
  • SEA Right Fielder
Mariners OF prospect Lazaro Montes went 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBI on Friday for Low-A Modesto.
Montes leads the minors with 62 RBI following Friday’s two-run blast -- his 11th round-tripper of the year. The 19-year-old prodigy holds an astronomical .337/.432/.561 triple-slash line across 248 plate appearances this season and is rapidly morphing into on the the top prospects in the entire fantasy landscape and projects as a potential impact four-category contributor down the road. There’s a legitimate shot he finishes the year at a top-10 fantasy prospect for dynasty purposes, if he’s not there already.
  • SEA Right Fielder
Mariners OF prospect Lazaro Montes went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer on Friday for Low-A Modesto.
Montes has homered twice in his last three contests and currently leads the minors with 56 RBI on the season. He’s up to nine round-trippers and one steal already. The 19-year-old burgeoning slugger is walking nearly as many times as he’s striking out at the moment and should get a look in the upper minors at some point in the coming months, if not sooner. He projects as a potential four-category middle-of-the-order force for fantasy purposes and is rapidly blossoming into one of the top prospects in the entire fantasy landscape.
  • SEA Outfield
Mariners OF prospect Lazaro Montes went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and five RBI on Friday for Low-A Modesto.
Montes possesses gargantuan over-the-fence power and projects as an impact four-category fantasy contributor, if he manages to put everything together at the highest level. There’s more variance in his long-term profile than most prospects given his massive frame, but his plate skills have been sharp since making his full-season debut last year. The 19-year-old will continue rocketing up dynasty rankings lists over the next few months as he continues his journey through Seattle’s minor-league system. He’s still a few years away from making an impact, but fantasy managers should get to know him now.
  • SEA Right Fielder
Mariners OF prospect Lázaro Montes homered twice for short-season DSL Mariners on Thursday.
Montes drove in three runs in the contest. Since being assigned to the Dominican Summer League club, the 17-year-old has homered three times, picked up six extra-base hits, and slashed .333/.500/.905 over 21 at-bats. The Mariners gave Montes a $2.5 million bonus in January as one of the best players of the IFA class, and he’s a left-handed hitter with plus power potential and a chance to hit for average from a swing that stays in the strike zone. He’s years away from making an impact, but Montes has massive upside. Those who play in deep dynasty leagues that can keep forever should add him now before it’s too late.
