Astros acquired RHP Kyle Smith from the Royals for OF Justin Maxwell.
Smith, 20, has a 2.85 ERA and 96/29 K/BB ratio over 104 1/3 innings in 19 starts with High-A Wilmington this season. The stuff doesn’t quite match the impressive numbers, but it’s ultimately a pretty nice get for the Astros, as Maxwell is a useful platoon player at best.

Astros prospect Kyle Smith underwent Tommy John surgery recently, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Jose de Jesus Ortiz.
Smith, 22, had a 3.96 ERA and a 127/37 K/BB ratio in 122 2/3 innings last year between high-A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi. The Astros got him from the Royals in 2013 in a trade for Justin Maxwell.
