Pirates signed first-round pick SS Konnor Griffin.
The ninth overall pick came with a slot bonus slightly under $6.22 million and he signed for just over $6.53 million. Griffin had committed to LSU. Baseball America ranked Griffin as the ninth-best player entering the draft and currently ranks him second in the Pirates farm system. He possess big time power and speed tools that could make him a future fantasy superstar, though at 18-years-old he was the youngest player selected in the top 10 this year.

Pirates selected Jackson Prep HS (MS) SS Konnor Griffin with the No. 9 pick of the 2024 MLB Draft.
Griffin is considered one of the most athletic players in the draft, as he puts up run times that suggest he can steal 30-plus bases at the highest level. That speed is complemented by big-time raw power, but there are some questions as to whether his lengthy swing will make it difficult to hit for a high average. He has a weapons-grade arm and the actions necessary to play shortstop, but centerfield could be in the cards as well. Either way, Griffin’s upside competes with any player in this class, even if he likely won’t be able to help fantasy players until near the end of the decade.
